Michael Derrers studies of political sciences and economics in Lausanne and Geneva fell into the period
of the great political changes in Eastern Europe. In order to witness the unfolding events he spent long
study periods in Bucharest and in Moscow. He finished his interdisciplinary studies with an MA in Public
Management. Further education in didactics, business administration and accountancy/finance
complete his profile.
After his studies Michael Derrer worked in Switzerlands export promotion, later in a Zurich-based
trading company - in both functions responsible for the countries of the former Soviet Union.
1998 - 2004 he built up an agency for the cooperation of Swiss consultants with Eastern European
companies and universities.
On the basis of his network in Eastern Europe Michael Derrer founded his company Ascent Swiss
Business Management AG and its Eastern European subsidiaries in 2004. As a project manager,
consultant and interpreter he has been working in most countries of East and Central Europe, as
well as in Russia and the CIS.
Michael Derrer coaches Swiss SMEs in their expansion to these countries and also writes articles about
the economies of Eastern Europe for different publications.
Michael Derrer is of German mother tongue and speaks excellent Russian, French, English and
Romanian, fluent Italian, Polish and Spanish and has good knowledge of Ukrainian, Belorussian, Czech,
Slovak, Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian.
