Dr. Veselin Popov has a number of publications about Roma/Gypsies in Bulgaria, Balkans and Central and
Eastern Europe. His major publications (in co-authorship with Elena Marushiakova) include the first
monographic research on history, social structure and culture of the Gypsies in Bulgaria (1997), book on
Gypsies in Ottoman Empire (2000) and book on Gypsies on the Black sea (2008). They are publishing also
Series in field of Romani Studies “Studii Romani”.
After 1989 he co-founded the Minority Studies Society Studii Romani. Veselin Popov is member of the
Gypsy Lore Society, which is more than 100 years old international scholar organization, in field of Romani
studies. He is member also of number of other professional organizations: European Association of Social
Anthropologists (EASA); Professors Beyond Borders; International Council of Museums/International
Committee for Museums Ethnography; International Council for Traditional Music. He is also member of
Scientific Committee of the European Academic Network on Romani Studies, established by European
Commission and Council of Europe.
He is member of editorial board of Romani Studies peer reviewed journal.
Veselin Popov works at the Department of Balkan Ethnology at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore
Studies with Ethnographic Museum at of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. There together with Dr.
Elena Marushiakova they created specialized Romani/Gypsy Studies Library with Archive
