Research on societal transformation processes, esp. migration, religion, urban conviciality and liberal democracy.

Astrid Mattes works as a postdoctoral migration researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She studied Political Science and Comparative Religious Studies at the Universities of Vienna and Limerick (Ireland). For her Doctoral Thesis Integrating Religion: The Roles of Religion in Austrian, German and Swiss immigrant Integration Studies she received the Dissertation Award for Research on Migration from the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Between 2010 and 2018 she worked as a researcher at the University of Vienna and was involved in different research programmes on the mapping of religions in Vienna, the politics of inclusion and exclusion and religion and transformation in contemporary societies. Her main fields of interest are immigrant integration politics, the governing of diversity in liberal democracies, religious pluralism and Islam in Europe.
