Brief description of your activity focus
Moral panics and media representations of marginalised groups in society - especially migrants, immigrants and the poor.

Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
My research expertise includes proficiency in the following key methods: discourse/framing analysis of newspaper
texts in print and online, and online comment/discussion threads; focus-group interviews and news-game (story-
and caption-writing) exercises; interviewing journalists, sources and public.

I am a professional journalist by background with more than 20 years experience of working as a full-time staff
writer for a variety of local and national news organisations in the UK, including the Guardian, Independent, Press
Association and Daily Mail. I have also freelanced for a range of other titles, from The Times Educational
Supplement and The Art Newspaper to History Today, the Press Gazette, Museums Journal and Current
Archaeology.

I am a senior examiner and board member of the Public Affairs Board of the National Council for the Training of
Journalists (NCTJ) in Britain, as well as being the author of an NCTJ set textbook: Essential Public Affairs for
Journalists (Oxford University Press), now approaching its fifth edition. I am also a member of the Association of
Journalism Educators (AJE) and the Media and Politics Group of the Political Studies Association (PSA).
 Research Activities

International and national projects beyond EU Framework Programme
Project working title: A comparative discourse analysis of newspaper representations of economic migrants across the
European Union

Prospective funder: Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

A funding bid is currently being put together to enable researchers at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen - led by Dr
James Morrison - to carry out a comparative discourse analysis of the way the issue of economic migration, and
economic migrants, is/are portrayed in national and major regional newspapers across a representative cross-section of
EU member states. We already have interest from a respected German-based book publisher.

Researchers involved in the project all need to be native or fluent speakers of the languages in which the newspapers
are written, and research-active academics, ideally at doctoral/post-doctoral level OR current doctoral students. We
are also looking for a research assistant to help coordinate the work on a contractual basis. This individual would need
to be at post-doctoral level, and their remuneration will be factored in to our funding application.

At present, all researchers involved in the project are drawn from Robert Gordon University itself, but we would be
keen to collaborate with academics from other member states, particularly Poland, Italy, Austria and Hungary. If we
can involve partners from institutions in at least two other member states, we would be able to submit a bid for
Horizon 2020 money.
