 Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
The Centre for Research in Anthropology (CRIA) is a nationwide platform developing high-quality innovative and
dynamic research addressing the complexities of contemporary social life, and promoting a fruitful dialogue
between Anthropology and other social sciences. It has become a reference institution in the field, both within and
outside Portugal, focussing on themes such as migration, refugees, ethnicity, health (illness, suffering, treatment,
cure),care, economy (formal and informal), family, gender, age groups (childhood, youth, ageing) , religion,
Islamic contexts, prisons and imprisonment, public policies, social exclusion, power relations, environment,
tourism, media, social memory, the uses of culture, material culture, museology, intangible heritage, art and
performance, visual anthropology, biological anthropology and paleopathology.
As a platform devoted to the advancement of knowledge in critical anthropological fields, CRIA is involved, both
as leading institution and as a partner, with other national and international entities in several internationally
funded projects, research programs, and scientific networks. Besides core research endeavours and their direct
outcomes, CRIA promotes and participates regularly in debate and dissemination initiatives, post-graduate and
advanced training programs, and also publishing activities. CRIA has been accredited to provide advisory services
to the National Committee for Intangible Heritage (IMC) and participates in the UNESCO/UNITWIN program
‘Sustainable Development and the Enhancement of Cultural Diversity’.
