Brief description of your activity focus
Contract Law, Commercial Law and Consumer Law, European Convention on Human Rights

Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
I have a proven sustained track record of high quality publications which make a significant and original
contribution at the national and international level to my areas of research in contract law, commercial law and
human rights law. My papers have been published in leading law journals and I have presented my research in the
UK, Ireland, Italy and Germany.

My research has developed at the intersection of legal theory (in particular, bargaining theories derived from law
& behavioural economics) and high level doctrinal legal analysis of contract and commercial law. My recent
research has focused on contractual innovation and change. For example, Professor James Davey (Southampton
University) and I have applied recent empirical evidence from the United States on the evolution of sovereign debt
contracts to changes that occurred in commercial transactions in the UK in the mid-1970s, and identified the
factors and personalities that led to such rapid legal innovation. My interest in changes and innovations in contract
law extends to new European initiatives - for example I have analysed the proposal for a Common European Sales
Law, using network analysis to determine the likelihood of parties opting in to such a regime.

I have been invited to participate in several international research projects. I was invited to join a Comparative
Study on Consumer Information Rights at the Ruprecht Karls University, Heidelberg. I am a member of “The
Common Core of European Private Law” Project which is hosted by the University of Trento, Italy. I was a
Reporter for the Research Group on “Unexpected Change of Circumstances”, which was coordinated by Professor
Hondius (University of Utrecht) and since published by Cambridge University Press. I am currently a Reporter for
an international research project on “Contractual Remedies”, coordinated by Professors Giliker, Ruefner and
Gsell.

I also have a clear reputation in Ireland as a national expert in contract law, as evidenced by my high impact
research for the Irish Law Reform Commission (on privity of contract) and the Law Society of Ireland (on various
aspects of European Contract and consumer law). I am also an examiner in Contract Law for the Law Society of
Ireland.I am also a member of an Advisory Group which is currently advising the Irish Government on a new
Consumer Rights Bill, and have drafted sections of the new bill.

I also have an interest in human rights, in particular the incorporation of the European Convention on Human
Rights in Ireland - a topic on which I have co-authored a book.
