Considering that CES is placed in a peripheral economic area - North-East region of Romania, but also at the EUs Eastern border - its main research interests are focused on Regional Development with its enclosed research topics: European Politics & Policies, Regional Disparities, Institutional Economics, International Specialization and Competitiveness, Tourism and regional development, Labour migration, Spatial Economics, EU Foreign Affairs, Eastern Partnership

Competences:
- CES has been recently rewarded with the “Award of Excellence for Research and Training in European Affairs” by the European Institute of Romania;
- CES is operating as a Centre of Excellence Jean Monnet in European Studies;
- CES has been integrated in a national network of 8 European centres specialised in EU issues;
- CES has been integrated in Jean Monnet and Europe Direct network through the Centre of European Documentation.

Competences:
- CES organizes and coordinates Master Programmes (for European Studies and Regional Development);
- CES elaborates studies by carrying out empirical analysis, comparative studies, surveys addressing regional development topics;
- CES organizes conferences, workshops, training courses, debates and events on regional development and European studies;
- CES coordinates EU-funded research projects (particularly within the frame of the Jean Monnet Life Long Learning Programme);
- CES provides consultancy services to public institutions, business environment representatives and individuals on various matters regarding the development of market studies and research, strategies of development and business, local development projects, financial assistance through European structural and cohesion funds;
- CES is contributing to the dissemination of information regarding the European Union and the integration process.
