The Institute focuses on global economic trends and deals with European integration, development economics and the economics of globalisation.

Main topics of Research Group on European Integration

Economic and financial consequences of the crisis in the European integration
Regional converegence in the EU. We consider regions of countries and regions within countries as well,
with a special regard to income inequalities.
Development of growth paths, role of export in the central and peripheric states of the EU.
Role of the European Union in the world trade. New features of EU-trade policy.
EU-budget, cohesion policy, agricultural policy. Evaluation of Central-and Eastern European economies.
Our researchers also deal with the key issues of development and utilisation of human capital.
Sectoral analysis of the economies, role of global value chains in Europe, competitiveness of CEEC
Welfare economies: own model of CEEC region or convergence to existing models (Scandinavian, anglo-
saxon, mediterranean).

Main topics of Research Group on Development Economics

The group analyses the internal economic paths of given regions based on different growth theories,
dealing with catching up and convergence.
Other direction of research is the analysis of different capitalist/market economic developments,
successful and unsuccessful examples.
International political economic researches are connected mainly to China and Russia, their economic role
in the world, global consequences, development of post-soviet states and energy problems. Global
problems related to the developing world (like food security, development aid etc.) are also researched
and analysed.
Integration to world economy and foreign economic orientation are also in the focus of our research. We
observe the development trends in Turkey, India, Southeast Asia, India, Latin-America, Africa too.
For Hungary the analysis of bilateral cooperation possibilities with for example Russia, Ukraine, China is
also important.

Main topics of Research Group on Economics of Globalization

Main changes in the techno-economic paradigm and their impacts on strata of societies: security questions,
differences in pace and directions of economic development, restructuring of economic and global political
power relations, comparative and competitive advantages and disadvantages of regions and states, the role
of qualitative factors of competitiveness.
Research of transnational corporations. Contradictions and conflicts between global corporate strategies
and local economic policy frames and institutions, the multilateralization of regulation and institutions,
interests of states and regions in this process. Analysis of questions of global activities of transnational
corporations with special regard to the roles of emerging market economies in international labor division.
Levels of integration in the internal and external corporate networks and potential upgrading of the
positions, states’ changing role and room of maneuvering in the different countries.
Research of the international financial markets and institutions, their global transactions and their
regulation, crisis management practices and monetary policies. ,Establishment of currency stability and its
institutional conditions,
Research on the role of institutions of multilateral cooperation including political organizations, in
maintaining economic, political ecological sustainability and security.
Global labor markets, trends of employment and migration, relationships between employment economic
growth and wealth in general and in the conditions of the current crisis.
Research of the current crisis and changes in the main tendencies of the world economy.
